Lest we forget

25th of April.

Today we remember those who gave their lives that we may have our freedom.
Today we celebrate the men and women that returned home and bow our head in thanks to those who did not.

Today I remember my Nana Bill as she was when I met her.
A proud, strong old woman who had been through things I can but dream of in my worst nightmares. She didn’t talk much about what happened when she volunteered as a Nurse for the second world war but rather told me stories of what the country went through as it rebuilt. She told me about the men who had already died inside, a generation of Kiwis that were lost and the search of the generations after for the meaning of it all.

My Nana taught me many things but one of the most important was the war is never going to solve anything.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
